For water sports enthusiasts, Lake Neusiedl is more than just a lake. It is Mecca; loved, honoured but also feared. It is known for strong winds in spring and autumn, a fact cherished by windsurfers, kite-surfers and sailors. On calm days, swimming and relaxing are the order of the day. There is no better way to spend a summer’s day than in one of the many beautiful lakeside recreation areas.
Weiden am See is a popular windsurfing spot. The jetty at the Weiden Surfclub extends 30 m into the lake, providing easy access to wind and water. The shallowness of the lake is not to be scoffed at - it is ideal for learning to windsurf and for playing other sports.
Weiden hosted the Hobie Cat 16 European Championships in 2003 and the ISAF World Sailing Games in 2006.
In winter, when the lake is covered in a thick layer of ice, thousands of people play around on ice-skates, sleds, ice-gliders or ice-boats on the biggest natural skating rink in Europe. An important tip: always check the weather report and check the status of the ice by phoning the local ice information line.
