Another noteworthy bird to be found in the area is the bee-eater, who makes its nests in the steep walls of the Wagram, north of the Zitzmannsdorfer Wiesen. The meadow habitat of the Zitzmannsdorfer Wiesen provides an ideal feeding environment for this bird. A large colony makes their nests on the so-called “Ungerberg” from April to the beginning of August every year.
Bee-eaters inhabit sunny and open but structured landscapes. They need to have an insect-rich hunting area in their proximity - for example dry grassland, bracken or extensively-cultivated vineyards and fields. They also require an area with many trees or copses for perching and sleeping.
This colourful bird is about the size of a blackbird and is a true flying acrobat. Bee-eaters are like swallows in that they fly with alternating quick beats of their wings followed by a gliding phase with outstretched wings.
Bee-eaters are highly specialised insect hunters. They prey on large flying insects from the lookouts - not only bees but also wasps, beetles, dragonflies, butterflies and Dipterens like gad-flies.
There is a hide at the Ungerberg which is positioned so that one can observe the birds directly in their breeding area - without disturbing them!
