Weiden am See has been one of the 7 National Park Neusiedler See Seewinkel municipalities since the founding of the park in 1993. The “ Zitzmannsdorfer Wiesen” is a conservation zone situated south of the village on the cycle path to Podersdorf. With a surface area of roughly 410 ha it is the largest continuous meadow area in the national park.
The name of this impressive meadowland stems from the village of "Zitzmannsdorf" which was destroyed by the Turks in 1529. The Zitzmannsdorfer Wiesen was the first natural protected area in Burgenland.
Cycling and walking paths wind their way through the Zitzmannsdorfer Wiesen, making this area extremely accessible. As in all national park areas however, visitors are not allowed to leave the marked paths.
The Green-winged Orchid is just one of variety of orchid species that form part of the botanical treasures the Zitzmannsdorfer Wiesen has to offer. Heat-loving grasses like feather grass, needle grass and fescues are right at home in the dry grassland area.
Additionally, the Zitzmannsdorfer Wiesen is also an important habitat for many animals - examples include the black-tailed godwit, the European curlew, the common redshank, the Northern lapwing and the short-eared owl.
