Cultivated vineyards have been around since Weiden am See first came into existence. The oldest finds (pips and grapes) are approximately 2700 years old. A flourishing wine culture already existed in Roman times, but deteriorated in the aftermath of the barbarian invasion.
It was only in the 13th century that the Cistercians renewed the cultivation of the vines. During this time an enclosed wine-growing zone existed, extending from Neusiedl am See past Weiden am See to Mönchhof along the "Wagrams".
Viticulture reached a highpoint in Weiden am See in the 17th century. In the year 1617, an entry in the register in the cathedral chapter of Raab mentions the production of “Ausbruch” wine in Weiden am See for the first time. This is the oldest record of Prädikatswein in the world!
Today around 150 families practice viticulture as either their main source of income or as a hobby. The wine-growing area is about 400 ha. The white wine varieties include Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Chardonnay, Weißburgunder and Sauvignon Blanc. The red wine varieties include Blauer Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The favourable Pannonian climate (dry hot summers) and continuous water supply provided by Lake Neusiedl means that “ Weine von besonderer Leseart”, or wines of high quality like Spätlese, Beerenauslese (both late harvest wines), Ausbruch, Trockenbeerenauslese (both sweet dessert wines), straw wine and ice wine are produced.
"The Day of the Open Cellar Door" on the last weekend in April and in November when many wineries are open, presents an opportunity for everyone to follow their heart and take a peek at the local wine production.
A tour through the vineyards with wine-tasting led by a renowned wine-maker enables those interested to take a look behind the scenes and get to know the workings of a vineyard all year round.
